Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s STANYS State Science Congress!
The following Grand Prizes and Special Awards were presented at an Awards Banquet
on Saturday, June 11th, 2011, at The College of Saint Rose in Albany:
  • Grand Prizes
    • Senior Division, Highest Honors:
      A gold medal and $1000 were awarded to Jayanth Krishnan, a 12th grader at Mahopac High School (Mahopac, NY) for his project, titled “Regulatory Signatures of Cancer Cell Lines Inferred from Gene Expression Data.”
    • Senior Division, High Honors:
      A silver medal and $500 were awarded to Benjamin Kornick, an 11th grader at Roslyn High School (Roslyn Heights, NY) for his project, “OMG: Look Who Joined Facebook! The Relationship between Virtual Parenting and Adolescent Risky Behaviors.”
    • Senior Division, Honors:
      A bronze medal and $250 were awarded to Alydaar Rangwala, a 12th grader at The Albany Academies (Albany, NY) for his project, “Dendritic Cell Migration towards UVA1 Light: Novel Basis for Potential Beneficial Phototherapy Treatment of Autoimmune Disease.”
    • Senior Division Honorable Mention: A $50 gift card was awarded to each of the following students:
      • Ido Goldenberg, a 12th grader at Brighton High School (Rochester, NY) for his project, “Effects of Magnetic Fields on Mitochondrial Respiration and Efficiency”
      • Christie Wang, an 11th grader at Roslyn High School (Roslyn Heights, NY) for her project, “A Novel Role of Cold Shock Protein in Mediating Hypoxia-Induced Inflammation in Microglia: Implications in Alzheimer’s Disease”
      • Garima Yadav, an 11th grader at Sachem High School North (Lake Ronkonkoma) for her project, “Seaweed + Tapioca = Vegetarian Jell-O?”
    • Junior Division, Highest Honors: Gold medals and $500 were awarded to the team of Emma Stein and Janelle Whitman, both 8th graders at Greenwich Central School (Greenwich, NY) for their project, “Bring the Heat: The Effect of Automatic Handdriers on Bacteria Growth.”
    • Junior Division, High Honors: A silver medal and $250 were awarded to Sahil Abbi, a 7th grader at Herricks Middle School (Albertson, NY) for his project, “Plants Running on Dunkin’.”
    • Junior Division, Honors: A bronze medal and $100 were awarded to Sagar Kumar, a 6th grader at Farnsworth Middle School (Guilderland, NY) for his project, “The Case of the Sandwich – Peanut Allergens and Sandwich ELISA.”
    • Junior Division Honorable Mention: A $50 gift card was awarded to each of the following students:
      • Peter Guastella, an 8th grader at Stimson Middle School (Huntington Station, NY) for his project, “The Doppler Effect”
      • Jessy Lin, an 8th grader at Commack Middle School (Commack, NY) for her project, “Go Green!: More Efficient Compostable Plastics”
      • Haley Sulahian, and 8th grader at Shelter Island UFSD (Shelter Island, NY) for her project, “Round & Round They Go, Where They Stop Only the Eyes and Ears Know: Balance and Dizziness”
  • Special Awards
    • Award for Excellence in Engineering, Mathematics, and Computers: $25 gift cards and special gifts were awarded to Chris McAvoy, a 10th grader at West Hempstead High School (West Hempstead, NY) for his project, “Biomimetic Wind Turbine Blade Power Analysis: Pitch Angle,” and to Daniel Sikavi, an 11th grader at Roslyn High School (Roslyn Heights, NY) for his project, “Predictors and Outcomes of Trust in the Patient-Oncologist Relationship: A Study of Breast Cancer Patients.”
    • Award for Excellence in Chemistry, Physics, and Space Science: $25 gift cards and special gifts were awarded to Kartik Kumaraguruparan, a 12th grader at Ward Melville Senior High School (Setauket, NY) for his project, “Design and Synthesis of Non-Diphenyl Ether Inhibitors of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis InhA Drug Target,” and to Claire Yost, an 11th grader at Pelham Memorial High School (Pelham, NY) for her project, “Analyzing the Activation of the Inhibitory Sites using HLAc Proteins with Differing Binding Patterns to LIR-1 and KIR2DS2.”
    • Pearson Higher Education Award for Excellence in Life and Environmental Science: $25 gift cards and special gifts from Pearson Higher Education, Inc., were awarded to the following students:
      • Jeanne Capanelli, Susan Laura Jao, and Kayla Neville, 10th graders at Commack High School (Commack, NY) for their project, “The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Courtship Behaviors of Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster)”
      • April Pun, an 11th grader at Jericho High School (Jericho, NY) for her project, “Effects of PTEN and VHL gene expressions on autophagy and apoptosis levels”
    • Pearson Higher Education Award for Excellence in Behavioral Science: $25 gift cards and special gifts from Pearson Higher Education, Inc., were awarded to the following students:
      • David Sheynberg, an 11th grader at Oceanside High School (Oceanside, NY) for his project, “The Impact of Caloric Information on Food Selection and BMI”
      • Max Tunney, a 7th grader at Long Beach Middle School (Lido Beach, NY) for his project, “Paw Preferences in Dogs”
