LIAISON TEACHER GUIDELINES
In each school, a locally-selected STANYS-member science teacher, or the Science Chairperson,
coordinates all application handling and makes contact (by mail/e-mail only)
with representatives of the Long Island Science Congress.
This first person to make contact becomes the school liaison and all school communication
goes through this liaison.
This coordinating teacher (liaison):
-
Enters the school password and completes the School Liaison Information and Application Form posted on the LISC web site.
-
Prints out the Checklist and peruses the names and project titles for accuracy.
- Mail by First Class or Priority Mail,
- NOT LATER THAN THE DEADLINE POSTED ON THE WEB SITE
- (preferably much earlier),
- the Checklist with two signatures,
- one STANYS Science Congress Section Approval Form for each student,
- and one application fee for the school in one envelope.
- Incomplete Checklists will be returned.
-
Receives verification of registration by e-mail from the Division Director and transmits any LISC information or materials to student participants or school administrators. No students or schools are registered until the verification of registration is received from the Division Director.
Each student should bring a minimum of five copies of an abstract and bibliography of their research
on the day of the Congress.
Only those schools that properly complete the Checklist, provide the proper application fee, file prior to the filing deadline date, and receive a verification of registration may participate in the Congress.
Entering an application on the web site does not complete the registration of your school.
PROJECT ACTIVITY AND PREPARATION:
All projects must be the work of the student(s) exclusively.
The teacher or other adult may supervise, but not assist in the preparation of the project.
Major work on all projects must have been done by the applicants between June of the previous year
and April of the year of the Congress.
FEE: The non-refundable application fee of $25 (twenty five dollars)
PER student (including EACH student in a group project) MUST be included in the Application Packet
(single check or money order, please,
to cover ALL the school's entrants for a given Division).
EXCESS FUNDS: Funds remitted in excess of those required for applicants whose completed application materials
are submitted will be handled as donations to the Long Island Science Congress.
They will not be considered as "blind entry" fees or as fees to cover possible entrants not originally
and properly identified.
SCREENING: The entrant's teacher and school's liaison teacher are expected to screen each project submitted as to its value.
SIGNATURE: The Principal’s signature on the Checklist indicates his/her awareness of the projects representing his/her school, the students participating, and the supervision of those students while attending the Congress.
SUBMITTING THE CHECKLIST: Junior Division and Senior Division Checklists must be mailed separately, with the envelope clearly labeled with the Division designation, by First Class or Priority Mail, with proper postage, and postmarked no later than the published deadline. "Our school’s computer was down." will not get you and extension. Much earlier mailing is recommended, as a limited number of project sites are available. Submit the Junior Division Application Packet to the proper Junior Division Director for your county, and the Senior Division Application Packet to the Senior Division Director, but not to the P. O. Box.
STATE SCIENCE CONGRESS (SENIOR DIVISION ONLY):
Entrants will be selected from among the highest individual award winners in the Senior Division to represent Long Island in the State Science Congress. It is important that the schools of State Science Congress participants make arrangements for the transportation and expenses, as well as chaperones, for those participants. State Congress participants are required to submit a 2000 word scientific paper on their project. |

WE WILL REJECT AND RETURN THE ENTIRE SCHOOL APPLICATION MATERIALS IF IMPROPERLY PREPARED MATERIALS ARE IN THE ENVELOPE. WE WILL ALSO RETURN THE ENTIRE APPLICATION ENVELOPE AFTER WE HAVE FILLED THE AVAILABLE PROJECT SPACES. |
CONGRESS PARTICIPANT: A school (and its student entrants) is considered a participant in the Congress ONLY after the verification of registration is received by e-mail, by the liaison, from the Division Director.
