GENERAL INFORMATION
|
|
WHO: Nassau and Suffolk County public and private school students in grades 7 through 12.
The JUNIOR SCIENCE CONGRESS is limited to 7-9th graders EXCEPT that 9th-graders
taking their 1st State Regents science courses MUST enter the Junior Division Congress.
The SENIOR SCIENCE CONGRESS is limited to 10-12th graders and
those 9th-graders taking their 2nd State Regents science courses.
Eighth graders taking State Regents science courses are not eligible for the Senior Science Congress.

WHAT: A display of SCIENCE RESEARCH PROJECTS requiring project proposals, abstracts,
reports and oral presentations based upon actual experiments and/or field observations,
performed by the participants themselves, that demonstrate the proper use of the scientific method.
These projects require physical displays, the use of instrumentation and scientific materials,
collection of field or experimental data, data analysis and representation of findings.

WHY: Share scientific experiences with others, earn awards and recognition and, for Senior Division entrants,
an opportunity for selection to represent Long Island at the STANYS New York State Science Congress.

TYPES: Projects may be
A) INDIVIDUAL- one person only, or
B) GROUP- two or three students from the same school district.
|
AREA OF ENTRY: The project application must indicate the area in which the project participant(s)
wish(es) to be judged. The choice is final.
1. Behavioral Science
2. Biology
3. Chemistry
4. Earth, Space, Energy
5. Ecology
6. Physics in Senior Division and Physical Science in Junior Division

LIMITS: A student may be entered in only one project per year. A maximum of 10 projects, per school,
per Division and a maximum of 3 students per project.

|
FEE: There is a non-refundable $25.00 application fee required for EACH student entrant
(the $25.00 fee also applies to EACH student in a group project).

|
ORAL PRESENTATION: All project entrants must be present and give an oral presentation no longer than eight minutes
in duration. Each presentation will be followed by a period of questioning by the judge. There will be at least TWO
(2) separate presentations, each to a different judge. Special Awards will often require additional presentations.

DISPLAY: The oral presentation should be supported by a physical display that can include equipment
(or representations thereof), charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, photographs, experimental apparatus,
data and other representations of findings.

|
WORKS IN PROGRESS: A project in progress need not terminate with the filing of the Application Packet.
Additional procedures, observations and collection of data, may continue until the actual date of the Congress.
The oral presentation should indicate all updated work, observations, data, and conclusions.

DISCLAIMER: Registration by the LISC does not prohibit the disqualification of a student at any time,
including after the project is presented at the Congress,
due to irregularities or insufficiencies of the project or its application.
